The Development of Ethnoparenting Model

Parenting knowledge is often dominated by Western studies, which is sometimes irrelevant for implementation in Southeast Asia because every country has a different culture and beliefs. Some research shows that ethnicity and culture contribute to parenting styles. Where  culture, ethnicity, socio-economic status and environment affect child development. Further, examining parenting practices based onculture and ethnicity is essential.

Through the development of Ethnoparenting Model, this study offers parenting concepts and practices that look at how values, traditions, philosophies and parenting practices are based on speci?c cultures and ethnicities, following the previous research, which explained that the concept and practice of ethnoparenting in education, parenting, and child care are based on the value system adopted by certain community groups in areas where there are values, attitudes, ordinances of society. The perspectives and systems of the community include religious systems, knowledge systems, language, art, life systems and technological equipment, social organizations, and subsystem systems where this is believed to ful?l the lives of its citizens.

Recently, SEAMEO CECCEP has been conducting studies on Ethnoparenting since 2020 among the Sundanese, Javanese and Bugis ethnics. The ethnoparenting studies aim to explore parenting practices based on local context, the role of mother, father, and community in parenting practices and the value of children among ethnic communities in Indonesia, speci?cally in the ethnic community in the Sunda ethnic, Bugis ethnic, and Java ethnic. Furthermore, the study is expected to be an initial study on the discourse of the value of children and parenting practices based on local tradition, which could be extended at the Southeast Asian level to identify parenting practices among ethnic groups in SEA Countries.
